An Article about Indiana LB Matt Mayberry

An injury to Adam McClurg opened the door for Mayberry last year, and he chipped in with 42 tackles, including eight in the Insight Bowl. He spent the summer working on his speed and acceleration with Kevin Kasper, the former Iowa wide receiver who played at Mayberry's high school and now trains athletes in Naperville, Ill.

Former Notre Dame safety Tom Zbikowski, now with the Baltimore Ravens, trained alongside Mayberry with Kasper.

"Kasper really mentored both of us through the whole process," Mayberry said.

Mayberry has high hopes for a linebacker group that returns starters Will Patterson and Geno Johnson but rarely gets recognition around the league.

From Coach Dave McGinnis........

With Sanders still walking around in a boot, newly claimed wide out Kevin Kasper has probably had the most playing time.

Hes got speed and is a guy that has some experience in the league. Even though it is very little, compared to the guys that we have right now, he is a fairly experienced player, offered Head Coach Dave McGinnis. Well use him and well use him a lot.

YOUTH MOVEMENT

Kasper, picked up off of waivers on Nov. 22, has been a great addition. He has filled the need at kick returner, created when MarTay Jenkins was lost to injury, and is developing quickly as a receiver. Fast and tough, Kasper's biggest problem in his two NFL seasons has been staying healthy.

He already has made some terrific catches and says he has learned more in the last month working with assistant Jerry Sullivan than he has at any other time in the NFL.

Kasper could be with the team for the long term. The top three receivers -- David Boston, Frank Sanders and Jenkins -- are unrestricted free agents, and at least one of them is likely to be gone. Kasper could play a key role next year as a third receiver, or possibly as a starter.

From the Seattle Post Intelligencer:

Special teams: Kevin Kasper's 34-yard kickoff return to set up the Seahawks' first touchdown. This guy -- a blur of bleached-blond hair, multi-ear piercings and impressive quickness -- just arrived 10 days earlier after being claimed off waivers from Denver, but he has had a big kickoff return in each of his two games in a Seahawks uniform.

Rich Tuten has ceased to be amazed at the athleticism he's witnessed at Broncos training camp. As the Broncos' strength and conditioning coach for eight seasons, he has seen a lot of prime-time athletes.

Yet when Tuten stops to think about it, there are some feats of strength, speed and physical ability that still leave a lasting impression.

Here are a few examples:

- When it comes to the bench press, wide receiver Kevin Kasper and linebacker Ian Gold stand out. Kasper weighs 195 pounds, and Gold about 220, but they both press more than 400 pounds.

- Kasper can jump out of the gym. According to Tuten, Kasper's vertical leap is 40-plus inches. Fellow wide receiver Rod Smith joins Kasper as the Broncos' best leapers.

- Some Broncos are nearly fat free.

"You have guys like (tight end) Shannon Sharpe, who are somewhere in the 6-8 percent body fat range," Tuten said. "Kasper is in that same group. (Wide receiver) Scottie Montgomery, Ian Gold, they are right there, too. Those guys are all very explosive and powerful, especially for their body weight. You can see, especially on their starts from the line of scrimmage, how incredibly quick and powerful they are."

Training camp T-shirts are the top-selling Denver Broncos items this year, followed by training camp tank-tops, straw hats and sleeveless T-shirts, Jones said Saturday. One of the surprise sellers this year are Kevin Kasper jerseys, he said. Thats unusual because Kasper doesnt even start for the Broncos.

From The Sporting News.......
Kevin Kasper, WR - The Seahawks needed immediate help when leading receiver Darrell Jackson was lost indefinitely with a concussion and related seizure in Dallas three weeks ago. Enter Kasper, who was claimed off waivers from the Denver Broncos. Kasper immediately moved into the four-receiver sets and also is returning kickoffs -- another need because rookie RB Maurice Morris is getting more time on offense. The coaches like Kaspers quickness as a slot receiver, and also how quickly hes been able to pick up the offense because he came from a similar passing game.

The most promising player of last year's training camp was Kasper. That promise has yet to be fulfilled because of injuries that keep putting him on the bench. Last year, it was a severely sprained ankle. This year, it's a cracked rib that forced him to miss the first two games. Kasper has great potential and a solid work ethic, but he must find a way to get back on the field. He has not yet made a connection with QB Brian Griese and still must prove he can get open against NFL defenders. (Patrick Saunders/TSN)

From Pat Kirwan at NFL.COM on his listing of top second year players.

Broncos WR Kevin Kasper: The Broncos wideout gets better every day. If he can stay healthy, he'll become a Mike Shanahan favorite this season. Kick returns, receptions, some punt returns and an occasional reverse could accumulate more than 700 yards -- not bad for the former sixth-round pick.

From the Denver Post

Hi, Adam. I'm curious about one of our young wide receivers. What is your take on Kevin Kasper? Despite limited playing time, he demonstrated some nifty moves and sideline catches worthy of note as a rookie (the one contested sideline catch was a beauty). Giving him a year or two to learn the system, does he have what it takes to be a full-time starter (or at least the third wideout)? Thanks.
-- Jim Bailey, Thayne, Wyo.

Jim, in time, Kasper is going to be a good - if not great - wide receiver. And the reason is, he loves the games. He is as dedicated to football as just about anyone in the Broncos locker room. And that is a recipe for success. My guess is this season, the potential you glimpsed last season will shine through.

News will be added throughout the season.
