Ashley Lelies injury may be Kevin Kaspers gain.
While Lelie, the Broncos No. 1 draft choice sits on the sidelines the past four days of training
camp with a right hamstring strain, Kasper may be gaining valuable repetitions in practice in the battle for Denvers third
wide receiver spot.
However, the Broncos sixth-round draft choice last year out of Iowa isnt thinking about the battle
for the third receiver spot. He is just concentrating on doing what he can to get better and improve his game.
When I am out there I am going to give 110 percent whether it is running or blocking or special teams,
anything, Kasper said.
Im just out there doing the best that I can to help the team. The No. 3 position will come to whoever
they give it to and whoever earns it. So I dont worry about that. I just go and play to the best of my abilities every day.
Kasper knew there would be stiff competition for the third receiver spot entering camp. Not only
would Kasper be battling fellow young veterans like third-year men Chris Cole and Scottie Montgomery, but the Broncos also
signed former Pro Bowl receiver RobMoore away from the Arizona Cardinals and drafted Lelie.
Even so, Kasper doesnt see the competition as a bad thing.
Instead, he views it as a challenge.
It just brings a more competitive atmosphere and that is what I enjoy, Kasper said. Ashley is a great
receiver, and we have some other great young receivers, so all it is doing is making our group as a whole better and that
excites me, and I look forward to that competition.
Besides, Kasper may have an edge over his competition. Not only is he a valuable asset as a receiver,
but he also can return kickoffs and punts, which only helps his cause.
Kasper has also gained valuable experience since last season when he made a big impression in training
camp and gained a spot on the roster.
I am in a completely different mentality this year, Kasper said. I am more confident. I know the
offense. I know the players and coaches better and what they expect of you and everything. It is a totally different atmosphere
and I am having a lot of fun this year and that is the main thing.
